Exciting update! Last week, the Chicago City Council unanimously passed the initial fair trade resolution. This moves Chicago one step closer to its goal of becoming a fair trade city! There are 5 major steps to becoming a fair trade city:
- City Council Resolution-DONE!
- Fair Trade available in local shops
- Fair Trade at work places, schools, faith communities and community organizations
- Media attention
- Formation of local fair trade steering group
Looking to help Chicago move forward? Ask for fair trade products in your workplace, local school, congregation or hospital. The city is also in the process of mapping neighborhood cafes and fair trade outlets around the city. Do you know of a great fair trade shop? Tell Mayu about it, and we will help spread the word! If you are a last-minute shopper, check out the Valentine’s Day fair trade gift shop! As you may know, Kate served on the FTC board for a few years. This organization is very near and dear to us, so please help Chicago push forward and reach fair trade status. Even if you don’t live in Chicago, continue to support the fair trade movement by shopping Mayu, all our products are fair trade certified! Also, look into what your city is doing surrounding sustainability and eco-development.
